Artist Spotlight: Emily Black Photography

We are excited to announce our new weekly blog series featuring artists who work at The Creative Center! This week's feature is on Emily Black, owner of Emily Black Photography.

Specializing in dance and yoga head shots, audition photos and fine art, we sat down with Emily for a quick Q & A:

1. How did you become an photographer? Have you always had a passion for photography?

Yes. I’ve been an artist my whole life. I have degrees in graphic design and sculpture, but photography was just a hobby. I mostly took travel photos and really developed a body of work while living in England from 2013 to 2016. Portrait photography is very different though, and I began building my skills at that in England as well.

2. What inspired you to start your own business?

When I moved back to the US, I wanted to work at something I loved but I saw that many areas of photography are difficult to break into, like wedding photography. I was shooting portraits and boudoir when a friend, whose daughter was a very serious 12-year-old ballerina at the time, asked me to shoot her dance portraits. I fell in love with shooting graceful female athletes almost instantly.

3. What is your favorite thing to photograph/what is your specialty?

I shoot dance and yoga head shots, audition photos, and fine art. I love showing the technical skill these dancers have worked so hard to perfect. I feel like I’m photographing a sculpture that might only last for a fraction of a second. It’s up to me to capture it in the most beautiful way.

4. Any fun facts about you or your business? Something you want people to know?

I’m not a dancer! I want to understand the technical aspects of dance better, so I plan to take adult beginner ballet classes. It’s a good thing I can laugh at myself because I won’t be good!

5. What is your favorite part about working at The Creative Center?

I love the group atmosphere. Seeing other artists’ work, no matter the style, keeps me energized and wanting to try new things.
